Direct Accountability Program (DAP)

Community justice diversion program offering an alternative to formal prosecution.

The Direct Accountability Program offers an alternative to formal prosecution for minor offences by focusing on early accountability and behaviour change. Many people eligible for diversion are living with mental health challenges, substance use, or social instability that contribute to offending.

Established under Crown prosecution directives and overseen by the Ontario Ministry of the Attorney General, DAP is offered at the discretion of the Crown Attorney. Participants take responsibility for their actions and complete community-based sanctions such as education programs, restitution, or community service; upon successful completion, charges may be withdrawn. Delivered through LLGAMH, the program ensures appropriate screening, support, and connection to treatment, reducing unnecessary criminalization and future justice involvement.
